Escape the Cold in Yamagata’s Famous Hot Spring Town
Ginzan Onsen
With its heavy snow and old-world atmosphere, Ginzan Onsen reminds visitors of an earlier time. Founded on a former silver mine site in rural Yamagata, Ginzan Onsen’s resorts cater to discerning guests with a taste for old-world atmosphere. Here you can step back in time and unwind amidst the heavenly scenery and soothing hot spring baths. Wooden ryokan (traditional Japanese inns) line the river to create picturesque scenes more evocative of a Taisho period (1912-26) novel than a modern resort. It’s a long way from big city life and well worth the trip.
Tohoku - A Journey Through Japan’s Deep North
Tohoku
Here is Tohoku, the northern part of Japan’s main island, Honshu. It starts just an hour and a half from Tokyo, but it feels less like a different country than a more intense version of the Japan you know. Tohoku is a region of wild mountains, heavy skies, and yet there’s also a certain lightness and grace in the traditions you experience and in the people you meet. It’s the kind of place where the Japanese go to feel more connected to their roots, to feel more Japanese. It’s the kind of place where you, the visitor, are also welcomed behind the sliding door.
